Hear for the holidays

It’s already autumn and we’re deep in the throes of the holiday season. Families and friends are making plans for festive get-togethers, kids are having big dreams about big gifts, and, once again, we’re all collectively saying to ourselves, “The year is almost over? Already? Again?” 

And while these things seem to happen every single year, they always feel like they’ve snuck up on us. Time and time again, one of the concerns so many of our patients express is feeling worried that they aren’t going to be able to hear their best in certain situations, like holiday parties, family gatherings, at restaurants, or at worship services.

These are the things that really make them feel engaged in the holiday season, as they are for  most of us, so they’re right to be interested in how they can have the best experience.

Get your hearing aids checked by a professional

Your hearing aids, like all pieces of technology that get used with frequency, need regular maintenance. Sometimes this means software or firmware updates, sometimes your settings need fine tuning, or sometimes there might be damage-related issues that need to be addressed.  Sometimes a simple tube or dome replacement or cleaning can help you hear like new. Your aids need a little TLC, just like you.

In many instances, we can address these issues at the practice. (More serious damage could require sending the aids directly to the manufacturer so their repair department can assess and resolve the problem.)

Visiting our office annually gives us the opportunity to discuss your current hearing experience, re-evaluate your hearing, make any necessary adjustments to your devices, professionally clean your hearing aids, and revisit your hearing goals to ensure you’re still on the right track. These office visits and services are provided by Beltone at no charge!  

Come to holiday events prepared to hear your best

Usually, when patients ask us how they can prepare for better holiday hearing experiences, we ask that they consider the following:

Do you have extra batteries? One of the more frustrating experiences you could find yourself in is having your batteries fail just as you’re enjoying conversations and festivities with loved ones. We recommend that you bring at least one extra pack of batteries with you when you’re going out just in case you might need them. 

If travelling, don’t forget your charger. Have rechargeable hearing aids? Bring your charger! Keeping your devices powered makes all the difference!

Have you cleaned your devices lately? Really basic things, like getting earwax stuck in your hearing aids’ tubing or ear molds can have a negative effect on your hearing experience. We recommend cleaning your devices daily (depending on how quickly your body produces earwax) so that you don’t have to endure the negative effects of blockage. Also, consider a dehumidifier that will dry your devices while you sleep!

Ask if you can choose your seat. A big part of having better hearing experiences is advocating for yourself. Having hearing loss is nothing to be ashamed of. If you’re having dinner at someone’s home, or going out to a restaurant, simply request that you be seated at an end of the table or in a manner where you’re not sitting in distracting places like near a restroom or in front of the kitchen. This will help you focus on the conversation and be more fully engaged, with less effort than you’d otherwise need.
